A Beginner’s Guide to Working Out

Fitness is an important part of staying healthy, both for your body and for your mind. As the new year begins, you may be considering resolutions that include a gym membership. That’s great! But, for those who have never worked out in a gym, the very thought can be overwhelming.

It can be daunting to walk into a gym and see the different equipment and machines, especially if you have no idea where to start. There are plenty of ways to get started, and we have a few tips for beginners at our Oklahoma and Arkansas gyms.

Step 1: Set A Goal

What brought you to the gym? Do you want to lose weight, gain muscle, or get in shape? Setting a goal is the best place to start because it gives you a starting point with a concrete plan and goal to work towards. With a clear path in front of you, steady progress will follow — along with a huge boost in confidence!

Step 2: Find a Routine that Fits Your Schedule

Look at your schedule and plan your day to include gym time. Even better, actually block that time on your calendar! The key is to establish a schedule that works for you and makes sure you stay consistent.

Don’t forget to factor in rest days, too – even the most dedicated gym-goers need them. With some thought and smart planning, finding a routine tailored to your lifestyle is achievable!

Step 3: Start Small

Many people have the misconception that they must hit their goals right out of the gate; but when it comes right down to it, slow and steady is key.

Resist the urge to start out at a fast trot on the treadmill for an hour. A short, 20-minute walk at a pace you can tolerate can make a significant difference. Of course, if your goal is more intense than that, increase the duration or intensity from there. Just remember that you shouldn’t overdo it on day one. Starting small allows you to steadily progress over time rather than quickly burning out!

Step 4: Ask for Help

Going to the gym isn’t always easy, especially when you’re just starting out and don’t quite know what to do. When feeling overwhelmed and confused, don’t be afraid to reach out for help! Gym staff is there to assist and guide you in the right direction. Just ask – whether it’s about the equipment, a particular exercise, or general queries, your gym staff will be happy to help.

Personal training may be the best way to get started at the gym, because a trainer can help you identify goals, match you with the most effective equipment, and make sure you’re using it properly for the best results. Your trainer is also your personal cheerleader to support, motivate, encourage – and celebrate with you!

Don’t be shy. Just make up your mind, pick yourself up, and take the first step. It just takes one to be on your way. Contact us today — and let us know how 10GYM can help!
